Ten Ocean and Beach Tips that Could Save Your Life
Important for Visitors and Residents alike. The Hawaiian waters are unlike other ocean waters usually experienced by people coming from the US Mainland and other parts of the world. Be prepared!
Sadly, drownings occur in our beautiful ocean, so before going into the waters, know and understand the ocean conditions where you are planning to swim. Many beaches will have signage specific to the conditions at that beach. If there isn’t a sign, ask someone for information. Most drownings can be prevented if caution is used. Look the beach over and identify the lifeguard station and location of the rescue tubes. Be prepared to assist by providing a rescue tube to someone in trouble. Each rescue tube has a locater on it, so call 911 and give them the location if you are helping someone. Use the tube as it is designed to keep the person afloat—not yourself to assist someone in trouble.
Hawaii beaches are accessible year round so you can always find a suitable swimming beach. We are providing this as a reminder to respect the ocean while here on your Hawaiian holiday or day at the beach.
1. Minimize risk by being alert to and respectful of the dangers of ocean conditions. ALWAYS SWIM WITH A FRIEND, so someone knows you are in the water!
2. Choose to swim those beaches which are lifeguard protected.
3. Look for rescue tubes and know where the closest one is in the event it is needed. There are over 100 rescue tubes strategically located on Kauai beaches and each one has a GPS coordinate so that it can be immediately relayed to 911.
4. Follow Hawaii beach warnings and closures. They are there to save your life.
5. Check with a lifeguard if you have any doubt about the conditions.
6. Watch the water for several minutes to look for larger waves appearing in groups. They are there to save your life!
7. Review ocean safety brochures which are provided in visitor accommodations, car rental locations or at the airports.
8. Visit the Hawaii Beach Safety website from the Hawaii Lifeguard Association for frequent updates on surf
conditions and warnings for all islands. http://oceansafety.ancl.hawaii.edu/v/2.0/?i=kauai
9. Understand rip currents and how to deal with them. If you find yourself in a rip current—know what to do. Do not fight a rip current--if caught in a current keep calm, float, breathe, don't panic, and wave for help. Go WITH the current and conserve energy.
10. Don’t get caught on wet rocks where unexpected waves can suddenly appear. Look for hidden rocks--the rocks in the water are very slippery and you can lose your balance very quickly.
The Lifeguard association reminds us that conditions are constantly changing--daily and seasonally and that waves come it sets--it can look calm for up to 20 minutes between dangerous sets of waves.
NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN—IT CAN BE DEADLY!
